Technology for the Workforce (Early Afternoon)

If you need to up your game in the technology department to improve work options, these sessions are just for you! 

Many are skilled at some aspects of technology (email, social media, texting, apps) but not always the tools needed in the world of work - word processing, spreadsheets, business communications, time management tools, internet research, and more. 

If you are interested in improving your career options, there are many offerings in our program that can assist you in reaching your goals. This option will get you on the road to building your skills and confidence for success.  You will work with a veteran instructor to design your own individualized program.  This is an in-person class.

Vanessa loves working with adult learners. She is really easy to be around and makes people extremely comfortable; she even makes learning math and computers fun! She is committed to helping adults discover their strengths, build their confidence, and realize they can accomplish their goals. In her free time, she loves to travel and explore the outdoors. Vanessa teaches math, science, technology, and provides college and career advising.

If you are ready to make a change in your life by finding the right job or career for you, this offering will provide you with the resources, skills, knowledge and support to seek your fortune! 

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • take career assessments;
  • explore job opportunities;
  • identify the training or education required (and apply for those programs);
  • prepare for jobs by writing resumes and participating in informational and mock interviews, and completing paper and online job applications; and
  • strengthen communication and other foundation skills you need to reach your goals.

You will work with a veteran instructor to design your own individualized program.  This is an in-person class.

Calendar Feb 26, 2024 at 5 pm, runs for 10 weeks

This course is designed to help adults improve their writing, proofreading, editing, and revising to prepare for the general expectations of college English and college writing.  We will cover the basics of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraph development, and will eventually write effective essays with clear ideas, smooth transitions, and logical support.  We will practice planning, research, prewriting, and organizing our writing.  We will learn to write different types of essays, to properly format them, to cite sources, and to avoid plagiarism. Learning to proofread for punctuation, usage, content, and support will be emphasized.  This is an in-person class with asynchronous work on Schoology, a learning management platform.

Emily Nash brings many years of experience teaching adult education and has strong skills in designing curriculum to meet the real needs of students. She’s respectful and sensitive to the needs of adult learners and is always a good listening ear. She loves to read, and between stints as an adult education teacher, she is a seasonal professional landscaper. Emily is a student advisor, and teaches English, HiSET prep and Multilingual Learners.

Now is a great time to start thinking about the college financial aid process and ways to boost college savings. The earlier you start, the more confident and relaxed you will feel when it is time to apply for financial aid.

Join Jessica Whittier, College Access Counselor with the Finance Authority of Maine for this 1-hour workshop as we talk all things paying for college.  This is live online using ZOOM.

This workshop is offered by FAME in partnership with adult education programs across Aroostook, Hancock, Penobscot and Washington Counties. 

Quickbooks: Basic Accounting Principles & Quickbooks Online (Mar)

During these three sessions, you will learn how to create a new company, set up preferences, explore and customize the dashboard, record transactions, customize lists, create recurring transactions, prepare estimates and reports, and create/edit lists.  The design of the course is that you'll attend the class and also do 2-3 hours of work between sessions which greatly enhances your learning.  This is a live online class using ZOOM.

Your instructor will assist you in accessing a free year long subscription to Quickbooks Online. 

You will receive a link to a brief pre-assessment with your email receipt.  This will assist the instructor in meeting your goals for the class.

Microsoft Excel Basics (Oct)

During this workshop, you will learn how to navigate a simple Excel worksheet, enter data in a worksheet, use basic math functions, do basic formatting, replicate data, use built-in functions and work with columns and rows.  This is a live online class using ZOOM.

The design of the course includes do 2-3 hours of work with the software between classes to gain the maximum benefit from the sessions. 

Makeup class, if needed, 10/24/24.

You will receive a link to a brief pre-assessment with your email receipt.  This will assist the instructor in meeting your goals for the class. 

 

You will want to have Microsoft Excel on your computer for this workshop and many people find it helpful to have two monitors, though it is certainly not necessary to benefit from the sessions.  There are two ways to accomplish this: 1) attach an external screen to your computer (contact our program if you need technical assistance with that); or 2) using two computers (one for Excel and the other for the ZOOM meeting).

Learn to navigate multiple worksheets, save your workbook, create formulas, use functions, change the layout of your worksheet,  create practical worksheets. 

Some examples of using Microsoft Excel as a Practical Tool:

  • 1040 Income Tax – Maintain tax information that is very useful when preparing your annual tax return. 
  • Grocery Shopping List – Quickly create a weekly grocery shopping list. What a time saver! 
  • Contractor Estimate Calculator - Great tool for any contractor who has to provide estimates for customers. 
  • Household Budget – Create a monthly budget of your household expenditures. 

This is live online class using ZOOM.
