This course is designed to help adults improve their reading, writing, proofreading, editing, and revising to prepare for standardized exams.  We cover the basics of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraph development, and will eventually write effective essays with clear ideas, smooth transitions, and logical support.  We will practice planning, research, prewriting, and organizing our writing.  Learning to proofread for punctuation, usage, content, and support will be emphasized.  This is an in-person class with ongoing enrollment through May.

Emily Nash brings many years of experience teaching adult education and has strong skills in designing curriculum to meet the real needs of students. She’s respectful and sensitive to the needs of adult learners and is always a good listening ear. She loves to read, and between stints as an adult education teacher, she is a seasonal professional landscaper. Emily is a student advisor, and teaches English, HiSET prep and Multilingual Learners.

If you don’t use it, you lose it! This is most notably true about math. Learn math in a fun and relaxed atmosphere including direct instruction, hands-on activities and online learning.  Many of us have anxiety when it comes to math. Our math teacher will start where you are and help you build skills and confidence with math. You learn how to study on your own and start habits to make you confident and successful in math.  This is an in-person class with ongoing enrollment.

Vanessa loves working with adult learners. She is really easy to be around and makes people extremely comfortable; she even makes learning math and computers fun! She is committed to helping adults discover their strengths, build their confidence, and realize they can accomplish their goals. In her free time, she loves to travel and explore the outdoors. Vanessa teaches math, science, technology, and provides college and career advising.

Quickbooks: Basic Accounting Principles & Quickbooks Online (Feb)

During these three sessions, you will learn basic accounting principles and how to apply them to setting up QuickBooks Online for a small business or organization.  This is a live, online class using ZOOM.

The design of the course is that you'll attend the class and also do 2-3 hours of work with the software between sessions which greatly enhances your learning.

You will receive a link to a brief pre-assessment with your email receipt.  This will assist the instructor in meeting your goals for the class. 

Val is a lifelong business educator and academic advisor focused on helping enrich and enhance students' educational and life purposes. He is experienced in college management and as an adult educator having taught at Mid-State College and Kennebec Valley Community College. His teaching experience covers over 45 years in the areas of computer applications, accounting, and Quickbooks training workshops.

Google Docs: Basics

Google docs is an invaluable and easy to use online tool similar to Microsoft Word. It's free, accessible from all devices and is super easy to share. Learn how to create documents, master useful formatting functions, share documents with others, and more as time permits. This workshop will introduce you to these features and share resources for futher learning.  This is an in-person class.  No class 02/18/25.

You’ll need a Gmail account for this workshop, and will need to know your account username and password.  It’s ideal if you access your Gmail on the web vs. a computer-based program.  If you’re not sure what this means, please contact us and we’ll be glad to assist you!  Google applications are free and are a practical way to learn programs without investing in software.

Are you interested in feeling more confident in communicating with others and on a team?  Teamwork and communication in the 21st century are skills that direct service employers want their employees to have. 

This 8-week, in-person course is designed to introduce the components of the skills of listening actively, strengthening relationships and focusing on solutions through communication, and to provide an opportunity to practice and demonstrate these skills.  There will be lots of listening, responding, teamwork, and talking about problems and solutions.  This course is a component of the Early Childhood Education Micro-credential, but anyone can benefit!  This is an in-person class.  No class on 02/19/25.  Makeup class, if needed, 04/09/25.

The Early Childhood Education Micro-Credential is a package of courses and certificates designed to prepare you for an entry level position in a childcare setting.  This credential will allow you to apply for a job with confidence by gaining the knowledge and skills to work with children as well as the employability and digital skills required for success on the job.

The components of the program include:

  • Northstar Digital Literacy Certification
  • WorkReadyTM Credential
  • Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid & CPR Certification
  • Communication for the Early Childhood Professional
  • A menu of self-paced online courses covering early childhood development, communicating with families, the importance of play, curriculum
  • an in-person internship at a local childcare center. 

These courses are being offering on Wednesdays from February through  June.

WorkReady Credential (Feb/Daytime)

Employers tell us they need employees who are skilled, can read well and express themselves, use computers and solve problems. They also tell us they need employees who can come to work regularly and be on time, work as part of a team, and manage conflict.

The WorkReady credential addresses the soft skills need to be successful in the workplace and is designed for people who have difficulty getting or keeping a job. Those eligible and successfully completng the course will earn a recognized credential.  This is a hybrid course with some in-person and some online assignments.    

We are working on the schedule for in-person component of this course, but please reach out to learn more and get started with some of the activities. The first step is to meet with one of our career advisors to make a plan that meets your needs and goals. Call us at 664.7110 to schedule an initial appointment.
