This course is designed to help adults improve their reading, writing, proofreading, editing, and revising to prepare for standardized exams.  We cover the basics of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraph development, and will eventually write effective essays with clear ideas, smooth transitions, and logical support.  We will practice planning, research, prewriting, and organizing our writing.  Learning to proofread for punctuation, usage, content, and support will be emphasized.  This is an in-person class with ongoing enrollment through May.

Emily Nash brings many years of experience teaching adult education and has strong skills in designing curriculum to meet the real needs of students. She’s respectful and sensitive to the needs of adult learners and is always a good listening ear. She loves to read, and between stints as an adult education teacher, she is a seasonal professional landscaper. Emily is a student advisor, and teaches English, HiSET prep and Multilingual Learners.

Quickbooks: Basic Accounting Principles & Quickbooks Online (Feb)

During these three sessions, you will learn basic accounting principles and how to apply them to setting up QuickBooks Online for a small business or organization.  This is a live, online class using ZOOM.

The design of the course is that you'll attend the class and also do 2-3 hours of work with the software between sessions which greatly enhances your learning.

You will receive a link to a brief pre-assessment with your email receipt.  This will assist the instructor in meeting your goals for the class. 

Val is a lifelong business educator and academic advisor focused on helping enrich and enhance students' educational and life purposes. He is experienced in college management and as an adult educator having taught at Mid-State College and Kennebec Valley Community College. His teaching experience covers over 45 years in the areas of computer applications, accounting, and Quickbooks training workshops.

Google Docs: Basics

Google docs is an invaluable and easy to use online tool similar to Microsoft Word. It's free, accessible from all devices and is super easy to share. Learn how to create documents, master useful formatting functions, share documents with others, and more as time permits. This workshop will introduce you to these features and share resources for futher learning.  This is an in-person class.  No class 02/18/25.

You’ll need a Gmail account for this workshop, and will need to know your account username and password.  It’s ideal if you access your Gmail on the web vs. a computer-based program.  If you’re not sure what this means, please contact us and we’ll be glad to assist you!  Google applications are free and are a practical way to learn programs without investing in software.

Vanessa loves working with adult learners. She is really easy to be around and makes people extremely comfortable; she even makes learning math and computers fun! She is committed to helping adults discover their strengths, build their confidence, and realize they can accomplish their goals. In her free time, she loves to travel and explore the outdoors. Vanessa teaches math, science, technology, and provides college and career advising.

Employers tell us they need employees who are skilled, can read well and express themselves, use computers and solve problems. They also tell us they need employees who can come to work regularly and be on time, work as part of a team, and manage conflict.

The WorkReady credential addresses the soft skills need to be successful in the workplace and is designed for people who have difficulty getting or keeping a job. Those eligible and successfully completng the course will earn a recognized credential.  This is a hybrid course with some in-person and some online assignments.    

We are working on the schedule for in-person component of this course, but please reach out to learn more and get started with some of the activities. The first step is to meet with one of our career advisors to make a plan that meets your needs and goals. Call us at 664.7110 to schedule an initial appointment.

Microsoft Excel Basics (Feb)

During this workshop, you will learn how to navigate a simple Excel worksheet, enter data into a worksheet, use basic math functions, do basic formatting, replicate data, use built-in functions and work with columns and rows.  The design of the course is that you'll attend the class and also do 2-3 hours of work between sessions which greatly enhances your learning.  This is a live, online class using ZOOM.  No class 02/20/25.

The design of this course includes 2-3 hours of work with the software between classes to gain maximum benefit from the sessions.

You will receive a link to a brief pre-assessment with your email receipt.  This will assist the instructor in meeting your goals for the class. 

You will want to have Microsoft Excel on your computer for this workshop and many people find it helpful to have two monitors, though it is certainly not necessary to benefit from the sessions.  There are two ways to accomplish this: 1) attach an external screen to your computer (contact our program if you need technical assistance with that); or 2) using two computers (one for Excel and the other for the ZOOM meeting).

Ellsworth Adult & Community Education is working with MDI Hospital and Birch Bay Village to offer a Certified Nursing Assistant course.

This is an in-person program with 70 hours of classes scheduled Monday and Tuesday evenings, 20 hours of labs and Wednesday evenings. These sessions will be held at Hancock County Technical Center in Ellsworth.  After the labs are complete, 40 hours of clinical will follow on Wednesdays during the daytime hours. 

CNA Plus also offers BLS, CPR & First Aid, Digital Literacy Certification and a WorkReady credential. 

Interested students can begin on the Northstar Digital Literacy anytime, which is recommended. Here's a link to our CNA Information Session Material

Computer Programming Basics Using Python

In this nine-week class, participants will learn the fundamentals of computer programming using the Python language.  This course is for the complete beginner or someone with slight exposure to programming.  Mr. Greer brings a wealth of experience, having worked in IT since 2004.  

Students will need either a PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer (no Chrome Books) and a reliable internet connection.  This a live online class using ZOOM.

Forms is the Google Suite App that allows you to create surveys, proposals and so much more. The surveys are easy to create and can automatically be formatted to download to a google sheet which makes reviewing the results quick and easy.  This is an in-person class;
