Photography: Digital Photography II (Feb)

You are comfortable with your camera and you want more! In this class we will explore the use of intermediate camera controls such as metering (spot, matrix, center weight), exposure and exposure compensation, ISO, aperture and shutter priority. We will take an in-depth look at manual focus and its use, fill flash and flash modes, as well as controlling motion, composition, and many other intermediate and advanced techniques. You should be familiar with your camera (also, bring your camera manual to class) and be ready for some in-depth photographic training.

Steve McGrath is a professional freelance photographer and photography teacher who has been creating images for 20 years. Steve first began by shooting sports photography for local high schools, then weddings, and stock agencies. His love of the outdoors led him to focusing more on his true passion. Steve was an active member of the Gateway Camera Club for many years, and has won many ribbons and awards at fairs and competitions through the club and on his own. Many of his images have been published in school text books.
Explore Your World through Drawing

You are probably good at taking pictures with your phone, but if you want to capture moments of your life in a more unique way, this class is for you.
An experienced artist-teacher will guide you through the basics of drawing and painting, and help you visually re-create whatever matters to you most - from real people and places, to things that live only in your imagination. All you need to bring is your curiosity about drawing, and your own special way of seeing the world around you. This is a live online class using ZOOM. No Class 11/23/23. Makeup class, if needed, 12/21/23.
For supplies we will use large drawing pads, pencils, pens, and a travel set of watercolors.
France Hilbert has taught classes at College of the Atlantic since 2018. She is a professional artist and art educator with an extensive resume of training and experience including major commissions and installations. Her artistic education began at the age of seven, when she was taught by her grandfather, the late artist Jaro Hilbert. From him, she received a thorough education in the classical tradition. She pursued her formal education at the National Fine Art Academy of Paris, France, (ENSBA), was an artist in residence in Copenhagen, studied German Expressionism in Berlin, and traveled extensively to paint and study around Europe and abroad. At the Art Students League of New York, she received a Merit Scholarship to master portraiture in painting and completed a Certificate in Sculpture. She was selected for “Model to Monument”, a sculpture program at The Academy of Art, Newington Cropsey Foundation, Hastings on Hudson, NY and received an Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant from the Art Students League of New York. Of her many public and private commissions, some are permanent installations. “Talma”, a 7-foot bronze sculpture is installed in the public square of the Theatre of the Valley of L’Yerres, in Brunoy, France. A pair of 4-foot bronze relief sculptures entitled ”The Calling” are installed at the Georgetown University Medical School building in Washington, DC.

Learn how to capture what you see in the great outdoors by finding the best composition . Experiment with light, camera settings, shutter speed and aperture for the best exposure. We’ll also explore different lenses, depth of field and filters. Tripods can be helpful for wildlife photography, but not required for the course. This is a hybrid course online sessions using ZOOM and one in-person class at Schoodic Point.
This is a live online class. One Class Saturday March 9th 10:00am-1:00om will be at Schoodic Point.

Learn the Ukulele Together
with Gary Bushee

Experience the joy of singing songs and strumming ukuleles together Ohana Style, a community-based experience with family and friends. Ohana means family in the Hawaiian language.
This is an inter-generational peer-learning approach to music making. This class is open to all levels, from beginner to ukulele wizard. Participants register as a pair (one child 6 or older and one responsible adult-parent, grandparent, ‘auntie’). The pairs will be able to practice the songs and learning materials at home and help each other learn. We will draw from a range of folk songs and popular music. Participants are encouraged to offer suggestions of songs that would be good for our group to learn.
Each participant must have a ukulele. All kinds of ukuleles are acceptable (soprano, concert, tenor, baritone, U bass). If you aren’t sure what you have, we can figure it out in class. Come join us for ukulele fun. Aloha!

A Writer's Workshop

Do you want to improve your writing skills for work? Write a poem to your beloved or finish that family memoir? Or maybe you’ve considered writing a script? If so, come join us in this 6-week writer’s workshop where we will explore a variety of writing genres.
This fall, our focus will be on STORIES - both real and imagined. We will analyze the elements of effective storytelling, including (but not limited to) plot, character, scene, point of view, voice, and tone. Participants will write and/or revise their stories of choice and together we will examine successful writing strategies and tricks of the trade. And most of all, we will discover that writing can be fun! This is a live online class using ZOOM.
Kristin holds a Masters in English (Literature), as well as an M. F. A. in Creative Writing from the University of Southern Maine. She is the 2019 recipient of the Maine Literary Award for Drama and Lit Fest’s 2019 Dramatic Writing Fellow for Emerging Writers. Watercolor Basics (Mar)

Watercolor Painting is an exciting medium; it flows and moves and does beautiful things. Instructor Mary Laury has been recognized for her work by the Maine Arts Commission. Participants will do landscapes and seascapes in this 4-session course. If you have never painted in watercolors we will start at the beginning. If you have painted before, you may pick up some new tips and tricks as well. We all learn together! This is an in-person course held at the Moore Community Center, an accessible facility with an elevator. Masks and social distancing required.

Find Your Rhythm, Soothe Your Heart & Soul

Join percussionist Tom Rush in exploring rhythm that’s good for your heart and soul. You’ll learn rudimental drumming rhythms as a tool to open the mind and meditation. If you’re looking for a formal drumming workshop this isn’t for you. Tom’s journey has been influenced by African and Indian rhythms and he’s been exploring their impact on his meditation and spiritual path. He’s hoping you’ll join with intention, in the Shamanistic traditions, and find your own meditation and spiritual path. Each person’s journey will be unique. If you have a drum, bring it along. If you don’t have one, Tom will have some to share.
