This course will cover the basics of grammar within ASL. Topics covered will be time, food, family, colors, numbers, ABCs, feelings, animals and likes and dislikes. Students will learn how to have a basic conversation in ASL. This class will also cover topics within the deaf community and will be voice off. The course uses a variety of learning methods, such as games, partner, and group work. Carrie Pierce is a deaf woman and nationally certified ASL teacher, teaching at universities and adult ed programs throughout Maine. Makeup class (if needed) 06/20/18.

 

American Sign Language 2

Calendar May 9, 2018 at 6:15 pm, runs for 6 weeks

This course will build on the foundation of ASL 1.  We will be increasing our comprehension of topics and watch our conversation skills unfold. We will use grammar skills of ASL. These will include contrastive structure, classifiers, listing, use of verbs, and asking questions. Vocabulary topics will be based on the needs of the class. The course is taught without the use of voice. Students will continue to develop strategies to communicate without talking.  Course is taught by playing games, peer interaction and group work.  Students should be able to recall vocabulary taught in ASL 1, based on food, feelings, opinions, family, animals, the calendar and a few questions.  Students should have at least 12 hours of prior experience with a certified ASL Deaf Instructor. Carrie Pierce is a deaf woman and nationally certified ASL teacher, teaching at universities and adult ed programs throughout Maine. Makeup class (if needed) 06/20/18.

 

Spanish for Beginners

This course is designed as a hands-on, conversation oriented Spanish enrichment class with emphasis on conversational Spanish, learning basic and common phrases used in travel situations such as registering at a hotel, asking directions, ordering food at restaurants, bartering for souvenirs, useful phrases at airports/train stations/taking buses and taxi conversations. A great option for folks preparing a trip to a Spanish speaking country or people wanting to connect with Spanish speaking neighbors or customers! Greg lived in Mexico for 17 years and has taught for over 25 years. He is currently teaching Spanish to local students from kindergarten to college. No class 02/22/18; makeup class (if needed) 04/12/18.
