Soils 101 for the Home Gardener: Understanding and Improving Your Soil!

Through four engaging sections, you’ll explore soil basics, understand soil health, learn to test and amend your soil, and adopt sustainable practices to build and protect it. Hands-on activities include texture testing and understanding soil test results. Gain valuable insights and techniques to better understand and care for your garden’s soil in a sustainable and informed way.

Abigail Lewis is an Environmental Scientist with an M.S. in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from UMaine, specializing in soil science and environmental consulting. Passionate about education and sustainability, she inspires students through hands-on, innovative approaches to environmental challenges, focusing on solutions that benefit both people and local communities.

Stress Reduction and Relaxation with Therapeutic Yoga (May)

This 60-minute yoga class will provide sequences that calm the nervous system, along with stretching/warming the muscles and preparing the mind to rest.  Breathing techniques, short meditation and positive affirmations will end the practice.  This is a live online class using ZOOM.

The Cycle of Nature: Connecting with Our Environment Through Art (Spring)

In this year-long series of art classes, we'll explore nature's rhythms across the four seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall.  Each class session focuses on observing and capturing seasonal changes in plants, animals and weather through drawing, watercolor and ink. Students will connect with the environment through hands-on activities, embracing the stillness of winter, renewal of spring, abundance of summer and transition of fall. Join us for one season or experience the full cycle. Each session offers a deeper appreciation of nature's constant transformations.  For supplies, we will use large drawing pads, pencils, pens and charcoal.

France Hilbert has taught classes at College of the Atlantic since 2018. She is a professional artist and art educator with an extensive resume of training and experience including major commissions and installations. Her artistic education began at the age of seven, when she was taught by her grandfather, the late artist Jaro Hilbert. From him, she received a thorough education in the classical tradition. She pursued her formal education at the National Fine Art Academy of Paris, France, (ENSBA), was an artist in residence in Copenhagen, studied German Expressionism in Berlin, and traveled extensively to paint and study around Europe and abroad. At the Art Students League of New York, she received a Merit Scholarship to master portraiture in painting and completed a Certificate in Sculpture. She was selected for “Model to Monument”, a sculpture program at The Academy of Art, Newington Cropsey Foundation, Hastings on Hudson, NY and received an Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant from the Art Students League of New York. Of her many public and private commissions, some are permanent installations. “Talma”, a 7-foot bronze sculpture is installed in the public square of the Theatre of the Valley of L’Yerres, in Brunoy, France. A pair of 4-foot bronze relief sculptures entitled ”The Calling” are installed at the Georgetown University Medical School building in Washington, DC.

Microsoft Excel Power Tools-Power Query, Power Pivot Tables, Power Business Intelligence (May)

These new Excel tools allow you to bring your work with Excel to a whole other level, from importing and sharing, importing and cleaning data, and modeling and calculating a large amount a data creating efficiencies, and so much more. 

Power Query allows you to import and shape data.  It has an easy to use interface, powerful tools to import and clean data.  

Power Pivot Tables allows data modeling and calculations.  It easily handles millions of rows of data and has modeling tools for efficient data storage and analysis. 

Power BI (Business Intelligence) is a complete business intelligence tool.  It features incredible visual options, has simple built-in interactive options, fantastic graphs and allows easy sharing of data. 

The design of this course includes 2-3 hours of work with the software between sessions to gain maximum benefit from the class.

You will want to have Microsoft Excel on your computer for this workshop and many people find it helpful to have two monitors, though it is certainly not necessary to benefit from the sessions.  There are two ways to accomplish this: 1) attach an external screen to your computer (contact our program if you need technical assistance with that); or 2) using two computers (one for Excel and the other for the ZOOM meeting).  This is a live, online class using ZOOM.  Makeup class, if needed, 05/22/25.

Val is a lifelong business educator and academic advisor focused on helping enrich and enhance students' educational and life purposes. He is experienced in college management and as an adult educator having taught at Mid-State College and Kennebec Valley Community College. His teaching experience covers over 45 years in the areas of computer applications, accounting, and Quickbooks training workshops.

Chair Yoga-A Morning Practice off the Mat (May)

This morning class, practiced in a chair, offers mind and body benefits without having to get up and off the floor or even changing into yoga clothes!  Enjoy a “pick me up” at home or at your office by using structural techniques to improve your range of motion, relax tight or overused muscles, and release tension from the mind. This is a live, online class using ZOOM.

Bob Ross® Oil Painting-Evening Waterfall (May/Daytime)

You can learn to paint just like Bob Ross does on TV - in a few hours! Classes are suited for beginners; you need no previous experience to attend. Annette Babcock is a Certified Ross instructor® and is certified to teach the Ross Landscape Method®.  

Evening Waterfall is from Joy of Painting® Season 12 Episode 8.  We will create an amazing waterfall in the evening forest on a black 16 x20 canvas.  Genuine Bob Ross Inc.® materials are used and provided.  Students are asked to bring a roll of paper towels for their personal use.  This is an in-person class.

She is committed to assisting people in breaking down the barriers to discussing preparations for the inevitable.  She will share some simple tools and resources to assist people in avoiding the time, energy and pain that can impact families for generations.  This is an in-person class.
