Excel is a fantastic tool that can be used for anything from creating a shopping list to creating a budget. This course will cover navigating the ribbon and tool bar; entering, editing, copying, and pasting data; formatting the spreadsheet’s cells and numbers, and adding and deleting columns and rows. Next, learn how to freeze and lock columns and rows; create equations to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers, and create a mock budget. More advanced topics, including integration with Word, will be geared toward students’ needs. Alison is a certified math instructor and brings 15 years of retail management experience to her teaching. Makeup class (if needed) 03/02/18.

This course will review the skills needed to create basic Word documents and the different ways that you can utilize the program. This course will cover navigating the ribbon and tool bar; understanding page layout, fonts, and formatting; how to copy, cut and paste information; understanding how to utilize basic shortcuts; set alignments; create tables in the document; export Word into a different format such as PDF; insert and edit text boxes, shapes, and pictures to create a flyer. Alison is a certified math instructor and brings 15 years of retail management experience to her teaching.

Alison is a certified math instructor and brings 15 years of retail management experience to her teaching.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness & Stress Reduction Series

The word “mindfulness” is popping up in all kinds of places these days, in education, healthcare, corporate board rooms, and even in the NFL and NBA.  In this four-session series we will start with an overview of mindfulness and how it can help us reduce stress and then share information about the biology of stress and how we can consciously activate our relaxation response through simple and easy to use techniques. We will also look at the positive aspects of stress, and how we can learn to “stress better”. You’ll have the opportunity to experience and practice different relaxation techniques and you will leave with tools that can be used in your everyday life. Jen is a Mindfulness and Meditation teacher, with a B.A. in Psychology, committed to helping people manage stress and live mindfully and meaningfully. Makeup class (if needed) 03/28/18.


Shakespeare @ The Grand: Julius Caesar: The Continued Relevancy of Shakespeare

An interactive and engaging look at Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and how its drama and themes are timeless, culminating in a viewing of the play. This class will look at the characters, the story and the play as it applies to the humanity in all of us. Opportunities to do some acting for those who wish. A PDF version of the play will be emailed before the class begins and extra hard copies will be available at class. The course includes admission to National Theatre’s live broadcast from London of Julius Caesar @ 2:00p on March 22nd at The Grand. Nick Turner is the Executive Director of The Grand in Ellsworth and has almost 30 years of performing arts and education experience. He is a devoted fan of Shakespeare and has taught and directed numerous plays.


Spanish for Beginners

This course is designed as a hands-on, conversation oriented Spanish enrichment class with emphasis on conversational Spanish, learning basic and common phrases used in travel situations such as registering at a hotel, asking directions, ordering food at restaurants, bartering for souvenirs, useful phrases at airports/train stations/taking buses and taxi conversations. A great option for folks preparing a trip to a Spanish speaking country or people wanting to connect with Spanish speaking neighbors or customers! Greg lived in Mexico for 17 years and has taught for over 25 years. He is currently teaching Spanish to local students from kindergarten to college. No class 02/22/18; makeup class (if needed) 04/12/18.


Women's Self-Defense

This course will provide you with tools to keep yourself safe. Veteran police officer, Amie Torrey will share tools and techniques for being pro-active, as well as safety tips and information about your legal right to protect yourself. Karate teacher Thomas Anderson will help prepare you with self-defense moves. Amie Torrey is a police officer for the City of Ellsworth and the resource officer for the Ellsworth School Department. She has over 20 years experience in law enforcement. Her father, Thomas Anderson, is a lifelong resident of Ellsworth with more than 30 years experience in karate.

Yoga: Beginners Hatha Yoga (February)

Beginners Hatha Yoga builds body awareness and flexibility through slower-moving progressions of traditional postures and conscious breathing. Props are used to allow every body type to experience the benefits of a yoga asana (posture) practice. Whether you are brand new to yoga or have limitations that have kept you from trying yoga in the past, you can feel safe and supported when you explore your own practice in this class. Hannah was trained in Hatha Vinyasa Yoga at ShivaShakti School of Yoga in Camden and has been practicing yoga for over 12 years.
