Seeing and Drawing

In our non-judgmental class environment, we will explore the essentials of looking to see, becoming aware of line, value, texture, negative and positive space, perspective and proportions while experimenting with mark-making tools besides pencils.

Course materials are available for purchase online (dickblick.com), at AC Moore and Hobby Lobby in Bangor, and Shirley’s Yarns & Crafts in Hancock (10% discount for Adult Education students). Makeup class (if needed) 11/13/18.

Margaret is a Certified Art Instructor with 25 years of experience in public school and private teaching. Her work has been exhibited widely and she has curatorial experience through her employment at the Blue Hill Public Library.

 

Substitute Teacher Training

Effective substitute teachers need to know how to access policies and procedures, facilities and lesson plans. They also need to understand the school culture and have a toolkit of instructional, classroom and behavior management strategies. This workshop addresses these topics and introduces you to key staff in the Ellsworth School Department buildings, as there is one training session in each school.  This is a 3-week course and attendance at all sessions is required.

JoAnne is a graduate of the California Culinary Academy. Since moving to Maine, she has worked as a professional pastry chef and owned a dessert catering company, as well as teaching cooking classes. Her classes are designed to be hands-on but are also perfect for those who may wish to just observe. The class always makes every item listed and everyone gets to sample. JoAnne advises students not to eat dinner before coming to class because there is so much food! Each student will receive a full print-out recipe packet to take home!

Traditional Irish Music Ensemble (Session) Playing

The class will give students of all abilities an opportunity to play traditional Irish and other Celtic tunes with others. Both melody and accompaniment strategies will be explored and practiced, allowing students to gain confidence as they expand their musical repertoires. Emphasis will be on playing by ear, without music, emulating how traditional music has been done for centuries. Students are encouraged to bring along their traditional acoustic instruments including, but not limited to: whistle, flute, Irish (Uilleann) pipes, Scottish smallpipes, bodhran, violin, button boxes, accordions, harp, guitar, bazooka, banjo, mandolin, keyboard, ukulele, dulcimer, cello, bones, spoons, melodica. No class 11/22/18. Makeup class (if needed) 12/06/18.

Chris Gray plays the bagpipes and bodhrá with musicians in Maine and Ireland. Chris studied at Gaelic College in Cape Breton and University College Cork in Ireland, where he received his Diploma in Irish Traditional Music and his MA in Ethnomusicology.

Chuck Whitney has been a science educator in Hancock County public schools and adjunct college faculty member for 27 years. He has been playing Celtic music and making musical instruments for the last 17 years.

 

Vinyasa Flow Yoga

Vinyasa means “to place in a special way,” referring to the postures. Breath-linked movement is used to flow from one posture to the next through a series of specially planned postures, often building to a specific goal or posture. This invigorating, aerobic class will help build stamina, strength, and still release the stress of daily life. No experience necessary for this class, just an open mind and will to move. No class 10/08/18.

Hannah Horecka was trained in Hatha Vinyasa Yoga at ShivaShakti School of Yoga in Camden, Maine. She has been practicing yoga for over 13 years and owns Quiet Strength Yoga Studio in Ellsworth. Her teachings are focused on proper alignment and body mechanics to heal and strengthen every body.

 

Watercolor

Explore color on paper; learn or practice the fundamentals of watercolor, brush techniques and tone transitions. This class is for anyone interested in exploring with watercolor paints and brushes. Students will be introduced to a range of materials and encouraged to play and yield their own varied results. All levels are encouraged to participate!

Supply List

  • Arches cold or hot press sheet paper (3 lg. sheets)
  • Palette (plastic, metal, or glass)
  • Masking tape, water cup, pencil
  • Watercolor in tubes (small): Alizarin crimson, cadmium red, cadmium yellow light, lemon yellow or Indian yellow, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, black, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, raw umber
  • Watercolor brushes (an assortment): round (size 4, 6, 8, 10), filbert, 1/2” flat (Kolinsky sable brushes preferred, but any assortment - fan, filbert or wash brushes are fun to experiment with)

Melissa suggests that this list is ideal. If all are not affordable, bring what you have to the first class and she’ll review supplies.

Melissa Rioux hails from coastal Maine but spent 10 years in New York teaching and writing arts curriculum for children and adults. She is devoted to the transformative power art can have to alter and improve the world.

Wreath Making!

Learn how to create wreaths and a garland in time for the holiday season! Students will use a 12” metal ring to produce a beautiful, fresh double-faced 20-24” balsam fir wreath to take home. Join us for a fun-filled class and learn the Maine tradition of “wreathing” under the guidance of a veteran Downeast wreath maker. Materials provided: freshly cut Maine balsam fir tips, ring and wire. Students should bring gloves, small hand pruners and any ribbon or decorations they would like to use. Audrey Herbest has been creating wreaths and other seasonal decorations with locally-harvested balsam for almost 35 years. Carrying on a long-lived family tradition and sharing this Maine craft with community members bring her great joy.

Please bring a $10.00 materials fee per wreath, payable to the instructor, to the class.
