Downeast Picklers! Introduction to Pickleball (Session 3)

This three-week course will cover the basic rules for playing the sport of pickleball, as well as the use of strategy as a way to win points. Emphasis will be placed on safety when moving on the courts. Pickleball is played with a paddle and wiffle ball, which will be provided for student use. No additional equipment is needed except for clean athletic shoes (no street shoes are allowed on the courts). The first hour and a half of each session will be for instruction, with the remainder of the course time available for open play. Come prepared to have fun! East Coast Swing for Beginners

East Coast Swing is a social rhythm partner dance done in 6 and 8 beat patterns in closed position with a 4/4 rhythm, set on a circular rotation left or right. It has also been referred to as "jitterbug”, Lindy and Triple Swing or at its most basic "swing dance" and takes its roots from Lindy Hop. This dance is done to big band type music, jazz, rock n' roll, disco, and pop, and has a fast and fun tempo that is very versatile to dance to. East Coast Swing incorporates lots of turns, spins and fun hair loops. It can be danced to slow or fast music with triple steps and rock steps. Songs like: "Great Balls of Fire" or "At the Hop" are popular for this energetic dance style. Come alone or with a partner - singles are welcome! Makeup class, if needed, 11/24/19.

Ellsworth School Department Substitute Teacher Orientation

Effective substitute teachers need to know how to access policies and procedures, facilities and lesson plans. They also need to understand the school culture and have a toolkit of instructional, classroom and behavior management strategies. Fall Soups and Breads

The perfect way to warm up on chilly fall evenings is with homemade soup and bread! In this class we will make:
- Lasagna Soup with Garlic Parmesan Bread Sticks;
- Thai Coconut Shrimp Soup (Tom Kha Thale) with Spicy Thai Corn Fritters; and
- German Sausage and Cabbage Hot Pot with Soft Pretzels and Beer Cheese Dipping Sauce.

Firearms Hunter Safety

This course is taught by a trained, certified instructor according to statewide standards. Course covers the following topics: proper firearms handling (rifle and shotgun), personal safety, survival/first aid, hunter responsibility, map and compass, and landowner relations. This is a home study course; a workbook will be given out at the Monday night class to be completed before the Saturday class. You must attend both classes to receive your certificate. If you choose, you may complete an online component in place of the Monday night session. You must complete and pass the online portion, and bring your printed certificate to the Saturday class. Registration is still required through Adult Ed - give us a call for more information. Please bring a bag lunch to the Saturday class. Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife courses are available to students 10 years of age and older; school age students must be accompanied by an adult. Guided Relaxation: Yoga Nidra

Release deeply held tension and stress with a guided deep relaxation called Yoga Nidra. Using blankets and mats, the students find a comfortable place to rest on their back and are led through a guided meditation where they completely relax their body. This deep relaxation practice can help relieve stress and anxiety, transform negative habits, improve focus, and improve sleep. It is also said that a 30-minute Yoga Nidra practice is equivalent to 2-4 hours of sleep! No yoga or meditation experience needed.
Heartsaver Adult and Pediatric First Aid CPR AED (Session 1)

A classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. This course also teaches adult CPR and AED use, and is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in first aid, CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory or other requirements.
